The short answer
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, in brief.
AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search, so the entry requirement is Search’s: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and Google says there are no additional technical requirements. Both may run many related searches to build an answer, so pages beyond the original results can be cited. Start with indexing and snippets; the rest is ordinary Search practice. The how-to lives in how to get featured in Google AI Overviews.
Sources
Where it finds sources
To be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements.
Google Search Central, AI Features and Your Website · read September 30, 2026Both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use “query fan-out”: issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response, and finding more supporting pages while it’s being written.
Google Search Central, AI Features and Your Website · read September 30, 2026Google says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup or special schema.org structured data to appear in these features.

Crawlers
The crawlers to know
| User agent | What it does | robots.txt |
|---|---|---|
Googlebot | Crawls for Google Search, including its AI features | Obeys it. Googlebot’s rules are the control for how Search crawls your site. |
Google-Extended | A robots.txt token, not a crawler: governs Gemini training and grounding | Obeys it, but it doesn’t affect your inclusion in Google Search. |

To limit what Google shows from a page in Search, AI features included, use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. Google-Extended governs AI training and grounding in Google’s other systems, not Search.

First steps
What to fix first
- 01
Make sure the pages that answer your buyers’ questions are indexed and can show a snippet: that’s Google’s whole entry requirement.
- 02
Check your snippet controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what Google’s AI features can show.
- 03
Don’t block Googlebot to keep content out of AI: its rules govern Search as a whole.
- 04
Cover the follow-up questions around your topic: with query fan-out, answers draw on related searches, and in Ahrefs’ data only 38% of the pages AI Overviews cited also ranked in the top 10 for the same query.
- 05
Skip AI text files and special markup for these features: Google says they aren’t needed.

FAQ
Questions, answered.
Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema.org structured data or AI text files to add. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. Google says Google-Extended doesn’t affect a site’s inclusion in Google Search. It governs training and grounding for Gemini, in Google’s other systems.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
In one randomized experiment, users made 39.8% fewer organic clicks when an AI Overview appeared; in another, sending all of people’s searches to AI Mode cut their click-through by 18.8 percentage points. Both are working papers, not yet peer-reviewed.
